The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an initiative of the Australian Government to provide support for Australians with significant disability, their families and carers.
The NDIS supports people with disability to build skills and capability so they can participate in the community and live an ordinary life.
As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.
It can take 6-12 months for an eligible person to enter the NDIS once it starts in your area.

The NDIS supports people with disability to build skills and capability so they can participate in the community and employment.
You can access the NDIS if you:
If you are aged 65 years and over you will not be eligible for the NDIS, but in most cases, you will receive support through the Commonwealth Aged Care system.
Early intervention helps people with a disability that is likely to be with them for life, but could be improved through additional support. The focus of early intervention is on people getting services and supports now so they require fewer services and supports in the future enabling them to live a more independent life.
Early intervention can also help children under 6 years old with developmental delay.
More information about early intervention is available on the NDIS website.
A guide to the access requirements for the NDIS can be found on the NDIS website or you can phone the NDIA directly on 1800 800 110 to ask about eligibility.
Prices for supports included in participant plans are developed and published by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
NDIA will update prices in the NDIS price guide on at least an annual basis, effective 1 July each year, taking into account market trends, changes in costs and wage rates. Changes to prices will be published on this website. Each updated price list will include the date it was published to help providers ensure that they are using the most up-to-date version.

The NDIS will provide funding for reasonable and necessary support, services and equipment to help participants live an ordinary life.
While there are guidelines as to what can be funded through the scheme, as a general rule the supports and services should help you to:

The NDIS provides funding to participants to purchase a range of supports aimed at increasing their independence, inclusion, as well as social and economic participation. This funding model is designed to be flexible and to allow service innovation. Importantly, the supports delivered will be chosen, and paid for, by individual participants.
In the NDIS payment system, supports for participants fall into three Support Purpose categories being Core, Capital and Capacity Building.
The NDIS Outcomes Framework has been developed to measure goal attainment for individual participants and overall performance of the Scheme. There are 8 Outcome Domains (‘Domains’) in the framework. It is intended that these Domains will help participants think about goals in different life areas and assist planners to explore where supports in these areas already exist, and where further supports are required.
NDIS service providers should be aware that all supports and services for Scheme participants should contribute to the achievement of their individual goals.
This NDIA Price Guide is arranged into 15 categories that align to the purpose of the funded supports and the NDIA Outcomes Framework – detailed above.
